Dear Professor Lan, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Good morning. Let me first bring you the best regards and apologies of ABB’s Group Executive Vice President Dinesh Paliwal, who is an advisor to the governor here and should be with you today. He was on his trip from the U.S. to China, and unfortunately he catched (caught) a very high fever and was not allowed to continue his trip from San Francisco to Guangzhou.

It is my honor to join you here today to share ABB’s position on Corporate Social Responsibility. To us, sustainability and social responsibility is not an add-on, but an essential part of our business. I will cover three areas with you today.

Firstly, I will provide you briefly with a picture of how ABB is doing business worldwide, measuring our sustainability on the triple-bottom line: economically, environmentally and socially.

Secondly, I will provide you with a few examples on how we put our words into actions around the world.

And finally, I will provide you with some examples of how ABB is translating this experience into a meaningful program here in China.

In the past four years, we have followed Global Reporting Initiatives to measure sustainability on the triple bottom line. We use this data to get a clear picture of how we generate economic growth, lower the environmental impact of our own and our customers’ business, while promoting social progress.

This brings me to my second point – how we put these words into actions around the world. For example, we are continuing to expand our Access to Electricity program for rural electrification. This program resulted in, resulted in power being turned on for the first time in a remote village in Tanzania, Africa, sparking immediate economic and social benefits for 1,800 residents.

We also expanded our work with the Business Leaders Initiative on Human Rights, in which ABB is a founding member. We are helping to deliver electricity and automation solution that provide individuals with heat, light, and essential commodities. Along with this, we are committed to support of basic rights such as housing, education, health and food.

This brings me now to my final and most important points – how ABB is contributing to China’s goals.

We have a five-point plan for profitable growth here in China. We believe this plan is critical for us to be a good corporate citizen by balancing the economic, social and environmental aspects of doing business. Its key points are as follows:

Firstly, we expect to grow approximately 20 percent year on year in a round up to 2008. This means we are in a good position to employ new employees, new people and pay competitive salaries.

Secondly, ABB have (has) invested more than 600 million US dollars up to now in China, and plan to continue to invest an additional more than 100 million in new product lines and factories. We just started a new $30 million joint venture in Jiangjin, which is near Chongqing, in addition to the three joint venture companies we have already built in Chongqing and Xi’an. Such investment in the west are essential to the goal of improving the living standards, also in the western part of China.

Thirdly, technology migration. We have special teams buying a lot of materials locally. Because these suppliers are close to our factories and customers, and our company can deliver with unparalleled speed.

But by transferring technology and know-how to China, we are helping to improve also overall skill base of our suppliers. We are working with them to ensure that they meet our rigorous standards for environment, health and safety as well as for quality.

Fourthly, we opened our R&D center in Beijing in March as part of a global network of labs focusing on transmission and distribution application, manufacturing technology and robotics. These are all important sciences to help you, Chinese customers, Chinese entrepreneurs, to become more resource effective and competitive in the world.

Fifthly, developing local talents is our key priority. I’m proud to say that we’ve hired more than 1,000 employees so far this year, which means we are ahead of schedule to have altogether approximately 12,000 employees in 2008. Knowing that our people are the key asset of every company, we are committed to keeping investment on the at-vocation education. I’m proud to say that in a survey done by Fortune in the recent years, ABB was judged as one of the top ten employers here in China.

But besides investing in our own people, we are also keen to give helping hand to the underprivileged university students studying electrical engineering. We made a sizable donation to the China Poverty Alleviation Fund to support these students this year. I think it is worth mentioning the source of this money we donated. In 2004, ABB launched a worldwide photo contest, using ABB shared values – respect, responsibility and determination as the theme. The photo contest attracted a great number of participants from more than a hundred countries where ABB operates, including customers, employees, medias and others. At the end, ABB group published a photobook taking the winning works and the money generated by this photobook which was about $100,000 was entirely handed over to China for supporting the students from poor families. It would have been much easier for ABB company to allocate this money directly, saving the trouble of organizing the photo show in so many countries, awarding the winners and publishing a photobook. But the process involving so many people, linking them with ABB’s corporate values became an education both internally and externally. And all these people involved have a sense of their ownership over this donation activity. In this way I’m sure the impact will much, will last much longer. Along with many programs for education and training of ABB workers, this is an important part of our goal to link China’s next generation of leaders with a sustainable approach to development.

As China works toward its goal to quadruple gross domestic product by 2020, we are likely to see profound changes in the country’s socio-economic structure and quality of life. We understand the challenges that lie ahead, such as the energy shortage which threatens China’s ambitious plans.

As a leading technology company, we are eager to share our experience regarding energy saving and creating a resource-efficient society.

China cannot rely on standard solution in its quest for reliable and efficient electricity. China has unique challenges – including the fact that power must be transmitted over long distances from resources in the West and North to high demand in the East and South.

We see it our responsibility not only to develop such a new technology but also to transfer them to China to support the efforts to build this resource-efficient society. For example the HVDC power transmission link rebuilt from Three Gorges to Guangdong saves hundreds of megawatts by avoiding losses, and the power saved is enough to serve more than 100,000 additional homes here in Guangdong.

HVDC not only saves energy but also has less impact on the environment. Instead of running many lines in parallel, it uses only two conductors which makes a big difference when itcames(comes) to the use of materials and land.

Also industrial efficiency could be significantly improved. The use of new generation motors could provide tremendous savings. Since motors account for 65 percent of industrial energy consumption, saving just a small fraction of this adds up to big savings.

But technology alone is not sufficient to ensure significant energy savings. Awareness of the need for savings must go hand in hand with the technical implementation.

Currently, many Chinese citizens, especially factory owners and entrepreneurs do not see the direct impact of saving energy. A program of carefully structured price increases for power in areas of high consumption could help to improve this understanding.

I sincerely hope this discussion today helps to reinforce the awareness on sustainability and social responsibility. It should influence the way we work together and help to achieve our mutual goals.

我很荣幸今天能跟大家会聚一堂,与大家分享ABB公司对于公司社会责任的见解及做法。对我们来说,可持续发展和社会责任不是附属物,而是我们公司至关重要的一部分。今天我主要讲三个方面:

首先,我想简要介绍一下ABB公司在世界各地的商业运作。评价公司发展的可持续性,

我们是通过“三重底线”——即经济、环境和社会三个层面来实现的。

第二,我将举例说明我们如何在全球范围内实现我们的承诺。

最后,我还将举一些例子,来说明ABB公司如何将其经验引进到中国,并且

应用到一些意义深远的项目中去。

在过去四年当中,我们根据全球报告倡议组织的要求,对我们的“三重底线”的可持续发展进行了测评。根据这些数据,我们更加清楚地了解到我们的表现,即在实现经济增长的同时,减少对我们自己以及对顾客的环境的影响,同时促进社会进步。

下面我想谈第二个问题,即如何在全球范围内实现我们的承诺。举个例子,我们一直致力于实施针对农村地区的“通电计划”。这一计划使非洲坦桑尼亚的一个偏远的村庄第一次通了电,作为直接结果,这个小村庄的1800名村民的经济及社会福祉均得以提高。

作为商界领袖人权倡议的发起成员之一,我们在这方面也作出了相当大的努力。我们想通过提供电力及自动化解决方案帮助人们享受取暖、照明和其他必要的设施。此外,我们还致力于支持居住、教育、健康和食品等基本人权。

为了实现在中国的可赢利发展,ABB公司实行了“五点计划”。我们相信这个计划对于我们成为一个良好的企业公民是至关重要的,它将帮助我们在公司的经济成长与社会和环境表现方面建立起一个平衡。该计划主要包括以下几个方面:

首先,我们希望到2008年可以实现大约20%的年增长率。这意味着我们将可以雇用更多的员工,同时支付具有竞争力的工资。

但是除了投资于我们自己的员工,我们同样致力于扶助电子工程专业的贫困大学生。本年度ABB公司对中国扶贫项目基金作了较大额度的捐款来支持贫困学生。我认为这里有必要提一下我们这笔捐款的来源。2004年ABB公司举行了一个全球范围内的摄影比赛,主题是ABB的共同价值观——相互尊重、勇担责任、坚定不移。此次摄影比赛吸引了众多的参与者,他们来自ABB公司在当地有运营的一百多个国家,包括消费者、员工、媒体和其他参与者。最后,ABB公司出版了一本摄影作品集,其中收集了获胜者的作品。销售这本作品集筹集的资金约有十万美元,我们把它全部用来中国支持贫困学生。如果ABB公司直接拨款可能相对会更容易,因为这样就可以免去在很多国家举行摄影展、给获胜者颁奖和出版摄影作品集的麻烦。但是整个过程涉及到那么多人,使他们与ABB公司的价值观联系起来可以说是一种教育,既内又外的教育。所有这些人士参与其中,对这个捐赠活动有了主人翁意识。以这种方式进行,我认为,产生的影响会更为久远。配合我们许多教育及培训员工的计划,这个计划具有重要意义,因为它可以帮助中国的下一代领导人理解可持续发展的模式。

中国计划到2020年实现其GDP翻两番的目标。届时,中国的社会经济结构及人民生活水平将会发生巨大的变化。但是这是一个严峻的任务,因为有很多挑战,比如说能源问题,将会威胁到这个宏伟计划的实现。

作为全球领先的技术公司,ABB将向中国传授关于节省能源的经验,帮助把中国建设成资源高效利用型的社会。

中国不能拘泥于标准的解决办法来得到稳定、有效的电力供应。因为中国面临着特殊的挑战——中国需要进行长距离的电力传输,因为其电力资源大多位于西部和北部,而电力需求则主要在东部与南部。

我们认为,不仅发展新科技是我们的责任,把科技转移到中国来支持建设资源高效利用型社会也是我们的责任。举个例子,重建的从长江三峡到广东的高压直流输电线路节省了数百兆瓦的电力,避免了浪费,而且节省的能源足可以供10多万户广东家庭的使用。

高压直流输电技术不仅可以节省电力,同时还可以减少对环境的影响。利用这一技术,不需要架设多条平行线路,只需要两根导线,这就与以往不同,可以大大节省原料及占地空间。

此外,工业能源利用率也可以大幅度地提高。新一代电机的使用可以帮助节省大量能源。由于电机的电力消耗量占工业电力消耗总量的65%,因此节省电机的电力消耗,那怕只是很小的一部分,都可以帮助节省大量的能源。

但是,节省能源不仅仅是技术问题。要更加有效地节省能源,技术应用需要与提高人们的节能意识同步进行。

目前,很多中国市民特别是工厂主和企业家并没有意识到节能所能够带来的直接益处。通过在高电力消费地区实施谨慎电价上涨计划,可以帮助人们更好地理解这一点。

我真诚地希望今天的讨论能够加强大家对可持续发展和社会责任的认识,这将影响我们的合作方式,并有助于实现我们的共同目标。
