Dialogue 9 – Chinese Business Mission to International CES in U.S.

Member of U.S. Department of Commerce:Having completed our agenda in New York, now we are heading for the LaGuardia airport for Las Vegas, where the 42ndInternational CES will open tomorrow.

Member of U.S. Department of Commerce:My pleasure. International CES, or International Consumer Electronics Show, is produced by theConsumer Electronics Association, or CEA, the preeminent trade association promoting growth in the consumer electronics industry.

Member of U.S. Department of Commerce:The importance of consumer electronics can never be overestimated. The International CES has been thriving in the past 4 decades, and it reaches across global markets, connects the industry and enables consumer electronics innovations to grow.

Member of U.S. Department of Commerce:That’s right. I think these Chinese companies are successfully building their brand awareness here in U.S. via this great channel. Actually, this year, 2700 exhibitors from over 140 countries will exhibit their products there.

Member of U.S. Department of Commerce:Right. They are manufacturers, developers and suppliers of consumer technology hardware, content, technology delivery systems and related products and services.

Member of U.S. Department of Commerce:That would take me some time to give you an exhaustive list. Well, to name just a few, there will be manufacturers, retailers, content providers and creators, broadband developers, cable and satellite TV providers, corporate buyers and government leaders from around the world.

Member of U.S. Department of Commerce:CES does much more. It has also the industry's largest educational forum to help companies expand their businesses and understand new technology. This year there will be approximately 200 conferences and more than 300 expert speakers. They will together discuss hot industry trends and topics.

Member of U.S. Department of Commerce:Regular visitors will have to get registered one month ahead of time, but you don’t have to worry about that. See, this is your VIP Pass, which will virtually give you full access.

Member of U.S. Department of Commerce:Sure not. We’ve been running this delegation for years. It’s actually part of the International Buyers Program offered by the Department of Commerce in U.S. to buyers all over the world.

Member of U.S. Department of Commerce:You are right. We understand the interests from Chinese government and other bodies in developing the consumer electronics sector, therefore, starting from 2007, we added to list governmental officials and professionals in related fields.

Member of U.S. Department of Commerce:I think that’s based on the success stories from past delegations. The power of word of mouth. Sometimes I even joke that even if we don’t send invitations, they will come to us.

Member of U.S. Department of Commerce:Don’t worry. With China’s potential and your huge population, especially the growing middle class, consumer electronics shows will find its growth momentum.

Member of U.S. Department of Commerce:We’ll be glad to provide you any assistance that can facilitate this work. Every year we organize and send U.S trade missions to China and elsewhere to find opportunities of cooperation and potential to tap local markets.

Member of U.S. Department of Commerce:Alright. Tonight, in your hotel rooms, you can go to official CES website for more information.

Chinese participant:We really learnt a lot of updated information in U.S. I know this CES is of importance in our itinerary, so can you tell us more?

Chinese participant:You said it’s now the 42ndsession. In contrast, consumer electronics show in China is a late-comer with its debut in April, 2010. We must speed up our growth.

Chinese participant:What a huge success, with all its international reach and influence. You know that it invites the yearly participation of many reputed Chinese enterprises, including Haier, Midea and TCL, do you?

Chinese participant:Do they cover the complete industrial chain in consumer electronics?

Chinese participant:All walks of life. We now have many exhibitions in China, with great effect. But some specific ones lack diversified contents. It’s just like people swarming into the hall to find exhibits and negotiate deals. What about CES?

Chinese participant:Awesome. Do we need to get pre-registered for those conferences? We are more interested in the consumer electronics market at large, rather than state-of-the-art technologies and products.

Chinese participant:Thanks. We will see to that tonight to find out our first choice tomorrow. Have you organized the same mission before?

Chinese participant:But we don’t just have buyers here; there are government officials and engineers as well.

Chinese participant:Our invitation was sent by the Commercial Service, U.S. Embassy. I think it’s the official organizer in China for the CES organizing committee. We had to fight to get the application cos many people were interested.

Chinese participant:We also hope that domestic consumer electronics shows could progress, so that we don’t always have to learn about updated products and technologies in foreign countries.

Chinese participant:Hope so. We’d love to have competent international exhibitors in China and your support is key to that.

Chinese participant:Hope we can have famous American enterprises in our consumer electronics show next year. Well, that’s a bit off-track. Let’s talk about your CES.
