Teacher at Oxford:Dear delegation from Guangzhou, my pleasure to see you here at Oxford University, where you are going to spend the next 3 weeks together.
Teacher at Oxford:Shall I take you all to the hall of residence? By the way, even though it’s now still our summer semester, we could still afford a few dormitories unused, so you can better enjoy the campus life here by living with our faculty and students. Hope you like it.
Teacher at Oxford:Oxford is embracing more international students now, with Chinese students composing a big portion. Really smart and diligent students. So, shall we move on? By the way, you just had a long, exhausting flight, why don’t we take the campus shuttle bus?
Teacher at Oxford:No problem, it’s all up to you. It won’t take long, 10 to 15 minutes on foot. We’ll pass some landmark buildings of Oxford. Maybe you are not unfamiliar with them. All right, let’s head. Tell me when you feet are on strike.
Teacher at Oxford:They do have a long history, and individual stories behind them as well. Over there, you can locate the ancient castle where the blockbuster Harry Potter series was shot. Can you all see that? No need to make a detour, you’ll have plenty of time.
Teacher at Oxford:It’s actually the canteen of the Christ Church College, with a tradition of over, let me see, 600 years. There is also the famous Gloucester Cathedral, more than 1,300 years old. Magnificent buildings, both of them.
Teacher at Oxford:You are right. We welcome students to make full use of the university facilities and resources. It’s a very open environment and access to knowledge is boundless.
Teacher at Oxford:We at Oxford believe that students have the freedom to learn and choose. You can learn anything and no one is forcing you to when you have no interest. We often say that our classroom reaches out the edge of the sky.
Teacher at Oxford:It’s some students talking with their mentor, Professor Moss, on poetry. It must be their mentoring session.
Teacher at Oxford:You will have a session on Oxford mentoring system, including our latest e-mentoring. But sure, just a snapshot. Oxford is famous for its mentoring system, which was initiated 600 to 700 years ago. It was applied further to undergraduate students in the 19thcentury.
Teacher at Oxford:Upon a student’s entry into Oxford, professors in the same discipline from different colleges will review his application letter and one of them will become the mentor of a specific student in his major.
Teacher at Oxford:Our mentor-student ratio is 1:2. Great pressure on the university, both financially and faculty-wise.
Teacher at Oxford:That’s all for the quality, and our tradition as well.
Teacher at Oxford:No, the place is not fixed all the time. Remember I said Oxford advocates freedom? Mentors can meet their students anywhere, office, coffee shop, bookstore, pub, riverside, any place you can imagine. That is a great bonding moment for student and mentor.

Guangzhou government official:Thank you. It’s also our pleasure to visit the world-renowned Oxford University, the most famous higher education institution in U.K. and even in the world.
Guangzhou government official:We sure do. Three weeks on this wonderful campus to experience the glamour of Oxford. We may bump into quite a few Chinese students here.
Guangzhou government official:I’ll ask them. (in two minutes) If it’s not distant, we’d like to walk there, since our large-sized luggage is carried by the coach, and we cannot wait to experience the Oxford campus culture.
Guangzhou government official:Ha-ha. What a nice and old-time vintage campus. Chinese universities are going in for modernity, losing all their traditions. Are these teaching buildings and halls of residence very old? They are well preserved though.
Guangzhou government official:That’s how I found it familiar. Is it the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? Medieval architecture are always grand and majestic.
Guangzhou government official:Indeed, we all think historical heritage is invaluable. There seem to be a lot of students ahead. They are reading and talking on the grass.
Guangzhou government official:What a nice and flexible learning environment! Well, I think Oxford students are self-motivated, right? That is, they learn on their own initiative, not pushed by their teachers.
Guangzhou government official:It’s a completely different story in China. Teachers try to guide students, fearing that the latter is misled. But Oxford students are all talented, so this student-driven approach is more effective. Look, are those students talking with their teacher?
Guangzhou government official:So it is. Is Oxford’s mentoring system very famous? Since many Chinese universities are now doing it, so, can you introduce us to it?
Guangzhou government official:Mentoring system for graduate students in China has developed for some time, but we had no idea that Oxford had it for undergraduates over 200 years ago. That’s exactly what we should learn from you.
Guangzhou government official:How many students does one mentor have at a time?
Guangzhou government official:That’s very high and you do need many excellent teachers. The ratio in graduate schools in China is pretty high, but the undergraduate mentor system is initiated in 2002 and mentors have quite a few students under them.
Guangzhou government official:Their meeting is not confined in office, right? It could be on grass or elsewhere, like what we just saw?
Guangzhou government official:That’s for sure; it closes the distance between student and mentor.
