On behalf of BMW, I would like to welcome you here for the BMW Hydrogen 7 press conference. //

I believe that most of you have been familiar with the BMW Hydrogen 7 shining with the ocean blue CleanEnergy logo on car body after its China debut at the Shanghai Auto Show in April and landing in Beijing in June. //Today, I am pleased to come to Guangzhou and drive into the world of the BMW Hydrogen 7 with all of you. //

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As we all know environmental protection and energy saving issues have become more and more of a challenge all around the world, of which the interaction between automobiles and resources consumption and air pollution is of higher concern. //

The topic has raised lots of questions like

- What is the mobility of the future?

- How to deal with shrinking nature resources and rising emissions?

- How to ensure sustainable mobility in the future? //

To solve these questions, BMW Group has developed a clear long-term energy and drive train strategy called “BMW Efficient Dynamics”. //

“BMW Efficient Dynamics” is BMW’s way to sustainable mobility, which combines maximum performance with minimum fuel consumption. //

- In the short term, we are promoting improvements for all models by further optimizing the combustion engine, by reducing drive train losses (due to transmission and tires), and also by implementing new measures in light-weight construction and aerodynamics. //

- In the medium term, an intelligent energy management will become effective which will offer hybrid features. //

- In the long term, “BMW Efficient Dynamics” envisions the use of hydrogen as the source of energy as part of our Clean Energy philosophy and thus as the true answer to the question of sustainable individual mobility. //

Ladies and Gentlemen,

BMW Hydrogen 7 marks an important milestone on our way to an era of sustainable mobility. With the hydrogen combustion engine, we are able to implement driving dynamics basically at zero emissions. // Furthermore, the BMW Hydrogen 7 offers the wide range of convenient features of a luxury sedan. We have deliberately chosen the 7 Series as this is our flagship for innovations. //

We have also deliberately chosen a bi-fueled approach for the BMW Hydrogen 7, which means the car can run on both fuels, hydrogen or gasoline. // The system allows for a vehicle cruising range of over 700 kilometers, 200 of them on hydrogen, and this can fully meets the daily use requirement. //

We intend to use the small demo fleet of one hundred BMW Hydrogen 7 as an offer – an offer that can only be realized in cooperation with partners in politics, business and the energy industry. //

With this offer, we are making two statements:

Firstly, we are giving a clear impulse for the further development of the hydrogen infrastructure. The energy source hydrogen has to find its way into traditional fuelling stations. //

Secondly, we are sending a message to political decision-makers worldwide, asking them to create a legal framework based on the solutions reached. // This includes regulations concerning registration and use of these vehicles, the fuel itself as well as the respective infrastructure. //

BMW started as early as in 1978 to conduct research on the hydrogen power unit, consistently developing and upgrading this technology with several generations of hydrogen cars in the years to come. // The next challenges will be to extend the vehicle’s cruising range as well as to lower its weight and the cost of materials. But this is not a sprint – this is a marathon. //

We are doing pioneering work in this field. And the drivers of this vehicle will join us in our pioneering work as well. // Every user of a BMW Hydrogen 7 is in exceptionally close touch with the engineers of the BMW Group involved in developing the car and its technology. //

I wish you have a great time today and in the days to come to enjoy the sheer driving pleasure with the BMW Hydrogen 7. // You will be surprised how natural it feels to take a ride this vehicle. Simply getting into the car will make you forget that you have actually taken a seat in the future. //

在此,我们再次强调香港政府对保护环境及推动科技发展之决心。太阳能是一种洁净和可持续产生的能源。发展太阳能科技可减少在发电过程中使用矿物燃料,从而减轻空气污染及全球暖化的问题。 //

Good morning.

I am truly delighted today to witness the signing ceremony of the Shenzhen - Hong Kong - DuPont Solar Energy Photovoltaic Technology Development Project. In recent years, rapid economic growth in this region has exerted enormous pressure on energy supply and on our environment. From a global perspective, energy resources generated from fossil fuels are facing at this time a host of formidable challenges, particularly rising prices and environmental concerns. Renewable energy, such as solar energy, is becoming increasingly important as an alternative power source to meet the global energy demand.

Pressing energy needs and environmental concerns are indeed some of the many challenges shared by Hong Kong and Shenzhen. But with challenges come opportunities. Transitioning from a fossil fuel-based economy to one based on renewable energy can spur economic growth and create jobs.

The solar energy industry is expected to develop rapidly into a multi-billion dollar industry, providing us with many new job opportunities. I am pleased that the Governments of Shenzhen and Hong Kong are joining hands in establishing a Solar Energy Research and Industrial Platform in partnership with DuPont. Together we will develop solar energy technologies and engage the potential of the solar energy industry.

The two letters of intent that will be signed later on today mark the launch of the Solar Energy Research and Industrial Platform. Under this arrangement, the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation will take the lead in establishing a Solar Energy R&D Support Centre at the Science Park in Tai Po in the development of solar energy and related technologies in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta; DuPont will join the centre as the first anchor tenant by locating its Global Photovoltaic R&D Centre in the Science Park. At the same time, the Shenzhen Municipal Government, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Government, will provide land and other facilities to support downstream solar product development and manufacturing activities. We will work together jointly in promoting the use of these products.

With this initiative, we reaffirm the Hong Kong Government's commitment to protect the environment and to promote technology development. Solar energy is a clean and sustainable energy resource. The development of solar energy will help reduce the use of fossil fuels in generating electricity. This will in turn help to reduce air pollution and the effects of global warming.

With this initiative, we are also establishing a new model of co-operation in our region that will no doubt be replicated in the future maximising the comparative advantages of all the parties concerned.

Innovation and technology are key to enhancing the overall productivity and competitiveness of our economy. This new centre will be at the forefront of developing more efficient means and devising new products in generating electricity from solar energy. There will be plenty of opportunities for collaboration with researchers in our universities. There will also be plenty of new opportunities for manufacturers here and throughout the Pearl River Delta to play a key role in each one of the different segments of the supply chain in producing relevant components and products for use in the overall process. We have an opportunity here to play a leading role in this industry.

The Solar Energy Research and Industrial Platform is a major co-operation initiative between Hong Kong and Shenzhen to improve the environment and to promote the development of renewable energy. It also marks a significant milestone for the "Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation Circle". The benefits of our joint efforts will be extended to other parts of the Mainland and Asia.

I am very pleased that DuPont has chosen to locate its Global Photovoltaic R&D Centre in Hong Kong. The decision reinforces our position as a prime location for innovation and technology-based companies in the region. And I look forward to even more companies making use of this novel model of operation in creating new technologies for mass application in the region.

Ladies and gentlemen, I congratulate DuPont on the momentous decision to make a significant expansion of its operation in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region. I am confident that this unique strategic partnership among Hong Kong, Shenzhen and DuPont will flourish as we work towards a brighter future.
